Mold and Yeast Found in Massachusetts Marijuana: What Consumers Need to Know

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission has identified marijuana products contaminated with yeast, mold, and coliforms that were sold by licensed retailers and medical dispensaries across the state. Initial lab tests conducted between March and September 2024 had cleared these products, but additional compliance testing ordered by the Commission found contamination exceeding acceptable regulatory limits. The affected products were sold from May 31, 2024, to January 30, 2025.

To mitigate risks, the Commission has restricted further sales through Metrc, the state’s cannabis tracking system. Massachusetts maintains stricter yeast and mold thresholds compared to many other states with legal cannabis markets. Consumers and medical marijuana patients are advised to check for affected products and take necessary precautions.
